1. BNP Paribas $2.598 Trillion US Dollars.
BNP Paribas is a French bank headquartered in Paris France. It is a global company with operations in 80 countries and employs 205,000 employees worldwide. BNP Paribas has significant share of the retail banking markets in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Italy. It acquired most of its banking operations in Belgium and Luxembourg from Belgian company Fortis in 2008 which was badly affected by the sub- prime crisis that affected finance companies worldwide. BNP Paribas trades in Belgium as BNP Paribas Fortis and is the largest retail bank in Belgium. In Luxembourg it trades as BGL BNP Paribas and is the third largest bank in Luxembourg by total assets. In Italy it owns Banca Nazionale del Lavoro ( commonly known as BNL) the sixth largest bank in Italy by total assets. In the United States it owns the Bank of the West and First Hawaiian Bank the largest bank in Hawaii. BNP Paribas has many other businesses in over 80 countries besides the businesses listed above.
2. HSBC $2.364 Trillion US Dollars.
HSBC has its headquarters in London United Kingdom and is the largest company listed on the London Stock Exchange. HSBC was established in 1865 in Hong Kong its original name was Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation hence the shortened HSBC. HSBC operates in 87 countries and it employs 295,000 people worldwide. HSBC has the fourth largest share of the banking market in the United Kingdom. It is the 7th largest bank in France by total assets where it trades as HSBC France. HSBC also has large operations in the United Sates. HSBC North America Holdings is the 10th largest banking group in the United States. HSBC has significant banking operations in Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Mexico. As HSBC was founded in Hong Kong it has large focus on the Asian market and has operations in most Asian countries.Currently HSBC is the largest one hundred percent foreign-owned bank operating in China and is the largest bank in Hong Kong.
3. Royal Bank of Scotland 2.291 Trillion US Dollars
Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) is a British bank and its headquarters are in Edinburgh, Scotland. RBS was founded in 1727. RBS has the largest share of the banking market in the United Kingdom. It operates under several brand names in the United kingdom including The Royal Bank of Scotland, National Westminster Bank, Ulster Bank, Drummonds and Coutts & Co. In the United states It owns Citizens Financial Group the 20th largest banking group in the United States.Citizens Financial Group operates mainly in the north eastern states of the United States. RBS was badly affected by the financial crisis of 2007 to the present. It has recently sold its banking operations in about 20 countries to help cover the large losses it suffered during the financial crisis. It is still however the third largest banking group in the world and has 148,000 thousand employees worldwide.
