As a boomer entrepreneur working online in your home business, you, like me, are probably bombarded with one shiny object after another. Each tool or business income opportunity promises appear to outdo the previous one.
The world is moving at lightening speed, new technologies seem to appear daily. Often, one of your biggest challenges is not only keep up, but also to distinguish which tools, or opportunities are ones that will serve you best to grow your home business. In addition, you have to make the distinction between the legitimate from the scam.
It's so easy to find yourself in a tailspin, and get caught up in the promotional hype to the point that you press the buy button unknowingly. You're convinced that this gizmo, which you didn't know existed five minutes ago, will be the answer to your home business success.
If you're like me, you probably find yourself being seduced to go from one site to another, watching hypnotizing video sales letters, learning about products or services you never knew existed. Then you get sucked into the spellbinding, and mesmerizing patter to the point that you're convinced you absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, must have what's being sold.
Believe me when I tell you I've been a sucker for more offers than I'd like to remember. However, I'm getting smarter, I hope, about making better, more informed decisions.
As a child you were taught to stop, look and listen before you cross the road. Let's exercise these three simple principles before you hit the "add to cart" button, and make a buying decision.
1. Stop!
Once you've watched the alluring presentation, and are about to buy, snap yourself back to reality. Be aware of what you're doing, and literally stop yourself in your tracks. Often we react, and are enticed by these offers without any real thought, especially if there are time-sensitive claims, or a limited quantity available.
By the way, know that there are more and more rules that punish companies making these allegations if they're false.
2. Look!
When you take a moment and step back from the offer, get out of your chair, and literally go into another room in your house. This act alone will help break the magnetic pull you might have to buy.
Once you've broken this link, you're giving yourself the opportunity to really look at the offer objectively. This detachment allows you to think twice, spend some time doing research. More importantly, it allows you to decide if this is really something you need in your business, and if it's something you'll really use right now.
Be aware of what it'll take to use or learn to use the product. If there are twenty videos to watch, when will you find the time to do this? The "now" is critical, because if you leave it for a rainy day, chances are that you'll buy something you'll never use.
3. Listen!
With the conscious awareness of what you're doing, take a moment and listen to what your gut is telling you. You'll know at a deeper level whether this is really something you need and will use. Don't kid yourself into thinking you'll use it especially when there's a learning curve involved that's going to take several days, weeks, or months. Do you really have the time in your already hectic schedule for this?
Be honest with yourself, that's really what this is all about. When you stop, look and listen, and are totally aware of what you're doing, you'll make more informed decisions. You'll cross the road safely and probably save yourself lots of money, frustration, and time.
