Defensive Wounds by Lisa Black

Lisa Black knows how to write a thriller. Her books are filled with descriptive writing that makes the reader feel they are a part of the story. She builds the story from the very first page and it intensifies from there. Characters are well drawn and interesting. I found all of these qualities in Lisa Black's books that I have read. Each one gets better than the last I have read. After you read one of Lisa Black's thrillers, you will want to go back and read the others written by this great author.
Forensic scientist Theresa MacLean receives a message from her daughter, Rachael, who works at the front desk of the Ritz-Carlton. The hotel is hosting a convention for defense attorneys. Rachael informs Theresa that someone is dead. The person murdered is Marie Corrigan, a high profile lawyer, who is not well liked by many including Theresa. Marie was known to do some unethical things to win her case including falsifying evidence.
Theresa begins an investigation and really has a very difficult job to do because any type of evidence found could belong to anyone who has checked into the room. Theresa is very thorough with what she does. She also runs different scenarios through her mind as to what could have happened to Marie. The way the killer left Marie's body was also very strange.
It doesn't take long for two more bodies to show up. Is someone killing defensive attorneys on a random basis or is there some kind of link between each person?
Rachael is dating a young man, also an employee at the hotel, who happens to have a connection to Marie Corrigan. Theresa is very upset when she learns about his past. Could he be connected to the murder of Marie Corrigan?
Defensive Wounds is loaded with forensic details that help to make the story very interesting. The reader will feel like they are inside Theresa's mind as she tries to figure out what happened. Just when you think it is all figured out, Theresa will pull a different way and come up with something new. Theresa is a strong character, good at what she does, and very protective of her daughter. Defensive Wounds is an intriguing read that held my interest and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good suspense novel. I have read several of Lisa Black's thrillers and Defensive Wounds is now my favorite.
