Is It Really Possible to Make a Living Doing Something That You Love?

For most people, the very thought of "doing what you love" is a pipe dream. Quitting your day job and jumping into a new venture geared towards what you love just isn't a viable option. You have bills to pay, mortgage or rent to make, car payments to deal with, childcare costs, and school loans too, so quitting your job and jumping into what you love just isn't going to happen. Besides, part of being an adult is having a job.
Work is something that we are all supposed to do. We are supposed to be productive members of society. Our entire education is geared around the tools that we need to have in place to become a "worker." We don't go to school to play. Work and play are polar opposites. Work is a serious thing- at least that is what we are taught throughout our formal education process.
I want to pose a question to you. When you think about work can you honestly answer the question: Was my time well spent today?
If the answer is "no," then perhaps you need to start thinking about making some changes in your work life. Here is the part of this article where I inject a little bit of "yes you can do what you love and get paid for it and possibly even make a living from it."
To begin with, what you love must be relevant to others somewhere, somehow. After watching all of the various reality television shows and how-to shows, I am pretty sure that for almost any topic, you can find an audience.
For example, does your passion involve eating ice-cream and watching classic movies? Most people would not get paid for those physical activities alone however there are aspects of those things that you might be able to turn into a valid business. You could for example, blog about various brands or flavors of ice cream including recipes for home-made ice-cream, facts about the history of ice-cream, tips for putting together an old-time ice-cream social, etc. You could even pair favorite types of ice-cream with your favorite old-time flicks. In setting up a website and blogging, you could offer advertiser's space on your website or you could hook up with an affiliate and sell ice-cream making supplies through your site. There are numerous ways that you could monetize your site.
Next, you need to ditch the get rich quick plan. It almost never works. Because most of us can't quit our day jobs and jump right in to our passion or hobby as a source of income, starting slowly is the way to go. It is doubtful that your idea is so hot that someone else is going to come and steal it out from under you overnight anyhow. So think about where you can work time into your schedule to turn what you love in to a business. If you are spending a lot of time sitting on the couch watching television and eating ice-cream, you may need to give up a little bit of that time to make your dream a reality.
Turning a dream or passion into a business does take work. It may take a lot of work up front. You may need to completely give up your television viewing habit for a while, if say, you want to build a website and don't have the resources to pay someone else to do it. The thing is that because this is a topic that you enjoy immensely it will seem less like work.
The next thing you need to do is practice patience and stay on focus. This relates back to the get rich quick plan. It may seem like you are spending hours devoted to your topic and not making any money. Don't give up. The key is to finding the right mix between what you love and what people are willing to pay you for. If you give up, you may never find that key.
Finally, drop your excuses and say goodbye to fear. One of the main reasons that we stay in a job we hate and can't honestly answer whether or not our time at work was well spent is because we are afraid- afraid of taking chances; afraid of moving on; afraid of failing. This fear conveniently leads to building excuses that keep us stuck in our miserable jobs with no end in sight.
How would you rather live- with a little bit of passion or a lot of unhappiness?
