Buy Brand New or Refurbished? Thoughts on Buying Electronics

In the world of electronics there is much thought about brand new verses refurbished. Some people feel that the only way to buy an electronic item is to purchase brand new and buy 2 and 3 year extended service plans. I would like to offer here thoughts for buying at an extreme opposite approach. For years, the American culture pressurized me for every electronic purchase I ever made: Buy new only! Buy all the service plans you are offered, and buy it now! I think what alerted me to change my thinking mostly was how highly pressurized the sales tactics were to get me to do this. And since I'm a 'bottom line' type person, I began going against the flow.
Slowly, I personally began changing my buying habits--these new devices offer 1 to 2 year warranties so I'll forgo the extra warranty--or at least the extended warranty. An instant $30 to $100 savings on every item. Wow, now that's significant. Then I thought, hmm, lets try these rerfurbs that are out there.
When receiving the refurbs I marveled how they looked brand new! Shrink wrapped, brand new outer casings, and fired up like new. I only accepted the free 90-Day Warranty when buying them.
Of all of the items I've bought refurbished, only one item thus far has had to be returned -- and it was the only one out of 100's that the particular store had to replace--and they did graciously, even though it was weeks past the warranty date.
So here is my thesis here; with monies being so tight and that leaves us sometimes wondering where the next few hundred dollars are going to come in to pay the mortgage over cover fuel for the car, we must make wise decisions with our purchases. You may say, it is wise to buy top notch and cover with insurance. But a wise, elder man said to me once while in my early 20's-- "Sister, you can be insurance poor."
Having done the research on myself, this is my conclusion. Many electronics can be bought as re-manufactured--with the 90 Day warranty...saving 100's of dollars even on one single purchase. If the item is faulty, it most likely will show up in that initial period. Companies are more than willing to replace a refurb. Don't bother with all of the warranties--many of these items will be obsolete in just a few years anyways and you will want to upgrade. Then sell your used item on eBay (eBayers LOVE used items for a great deal) and use that money to help upgrade for another very inexpensive refurb.
Dare to try the research project on yourself and immediately put that money back into your budget -- Hey, get a better car instead! Go on a much needed vacation, or at least -- pay that Mortgage on time!!!
