Is China The Future For The Perfume Industry?

Although we see perfumes sales in most parts of the world falling, they are rising at a rapid rate in China. This has come as a surprise to perfume makers, since perfume has never particular had high sales in China or in much of the East for that matter. With the Chinese seeing a rise in their economy, they have started to favor many Western brand names, from shoes to clothes to cosmetics. This could possibly be because they are now able to purchase items which were once deemed extremely luxury, like perfume. But now that many Chinese citizens are able to buy such items, they are doing so very extravagantly, buying the best and most expensive perfumes.
The fragrance would be wise to do as much business as possible in China in the coming years. Perfume being popular in China is somewhat of a new trend, and we don't know how long it will last. They can do much to advertise their products, since Chinese use perfume for more than just smelling good. They use it to repel mosquitoes, to make the house smell good, and often carry small bottles of perfume with them everywhere they go, in case they happen to be in a place that doesn't smell good.
Ironically, the brand names that are taking a big hit America and in much of the West are doing a turn around in China. China has become one big label-whore, and people will buy a fragrance that has a popular brand name on it simply for that logo. Celebrity perfumes are doing well in China, like Justin Beiber and Britney Spears, but also common house hold perfume brands like Chanel, Christian Dior and Calvin Klein.
International perfume companies are also doing well in China because China itself doesn't have many brands of perfume. This is because perfume has never been popular in China, and the markets have put their energies elsewhere. Even though China is now seeing more domestic perfume brands being made, the people are still buying the popular "Western" brands that they see on TV and the internet.
For those in the perfume industry who wish to market their products in China, a little research should be done first. The Chinese tend to like floral, clean and citrus fragrances. Perfumes that are too strong or overpowering have not done well in the Chinese markets. Perfume makers like Chanel and Prada have redesigned some of their more popular fragrances in order to better meet the Chinese taste.
